Gombe Launches Multi-Phase Vaccination Drive Following 332 Diphtheria Cases Across Four LGAs

The Gombe State Government has initiated an emergency immunization campaign in response to a surge in diphtheria cases, recording 332 confirmed infections across four local government areas.

The rapid response targets high-risk communities within the Akko, Gombe, Kwami, and Funakaye local government areas, where transmission rates have prompted health authorities to intervene.

In a directive issued to school administrators statewide, the Gombe State Ministry of Education mandated full cooperation between academic institutions and visiting medical teams to ensure comprehensive coverage among vulnerable student populations.

The second dose will be administered 14 days after the first, while the third and final dose will follow seven days later... Diphtheria—a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the upper respiratory tract—spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets and close physical contact.

Health officials emphasized that strict adherence to the three-dose vaccination schedule, alongside active case tracking and school-level sensitization, remains crucial to halting transmission and protecting children throughout the affected LGAs.
