NYSC, Free Medical Outreach, Abia Rural Communities

The National Youth Service Corps has launched its 2025 fourth-quarter Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers in Abia State, offering free healthcare to underserved residents. The outreach was held at Nkechi Hospital and Surgical Centre in Obingwa LGA, in collaboration with Onunwa Foundation USA and the hospital management.

Over 1,500 beneficiaries received medical consultations, treatments, medications, and surgeries. NYSC State Coordinator, Gladys Adama, urged residents to take advantage of the programme, describing the initiative as the scheme’s flagship platform for delivering healthcare to remote communities.

She noted that medical corps members, supported by volunteer doctors from the United States, were on ground to provide services. Adama also thanked foundation CEO and former Deputy Governor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Nwakanma, for sponsoring the programme, and encouraged individuals and organisations to support future editions.

Nwakanma said the foundation was committed to humanitarian work and appreciated NYSC for deploying doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other personnel free of charge.

A beneficiary, Peace Atubiri, said she received free malaria drugs and reading glasses, describing the programme as a huge relief for the community.
