"When Disrespect is the Only Dish Served, Leave the Table" — Iyabo Obasanjo Dumps APC

Iyabo Obasanjo

Former Ogun Central senator and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has officially resigned her membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing persistent disrespect, exclusion, and systematic marginalization by the party's leadership layout in Ogun State.

Her exit was made public on Monday, June 8, 2026, through a formal resignation letter dated May 31, addressed to the APC State Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi. The U.S.-based Associate Professor of Epidemiology and former Ogun State Health Commissioner explained that her decision followed deep reflection on the treatment meted out to her and her grassroots supporters following the party's gubernatorial primary process.

Obasanjo fiercely criticized the flawed consensus arrangement that recently produced Senator Solomon Adeola (popularly known as Yayi) as the APC’s official governorship candidate for the 2027 election. She argued that the selection method completely violated the national party's strict statutory guidelines, which require dialogue, mutual agreement, and direct consultation among all active aspirants before any consensus flagbearer is unveiled.

“Based on my conviction that party unity is important, I wrote my letter accepting the party's consensus candidate that night even with the flawed process... A famous person once said that when disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcomed,” Obasanjo stated explicitly in her letter.

Despite the bitter split with the state chapter, the former lawmaker expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the warm courtesies he consistently extended to her during her time in the party, while also thanking Chief Sanusi and the Ogun Central Senatorial Chairman, Chief Soremi, for their personal kindness.

What do you think about Iyabo Obasanjo’s sudden exit from the APC? Will her resignation negatively affect the party's dominance in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 governorship race? Please share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
