The United Nations, in collaboration with the humanitarian community, has officially launched a massive $1.4 billion appeal to provide life-saving assistance to millions of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan aims to address one of the world's most complex and long-standing crises, driven by escalating armed conflict, massive displacement, and acute food insecurity.

According to the UN, over 25 million people in the DRC are currently in need of humanitarian aid, with the eastern provinces particularly devastated by the activities of various armed groups. The requested funds are intended to provide essential services, including emergency food aid, healthcare, clean water, and protection for the most vulnerable populations, especially women and children who bear the brunt of the violence.

The humanitarian community emphasized that without immediate and sustained funding, millions of lives are at risk. Beyond immediate relief, the plan also focuses on strengthening the resilience of local communities to help them survive recurring shocks and a lack of basic infrastructure.

The UN has urged international donors to act swiftly, stressing that the situation in the DRC is a litmus test for the world's commitment to "leaving no one behind" in humanitarian response.
