Trump, US Strikes on Iran, Own Terms

President Donald Trump has defended his decision to launch military strikes against Iran, insisting that the United States acted on its own terms and not because it was forced into action by Israel or any other ally. Trump and his team moved quickly to reframe the narrative after remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the US strikes may have been prompted by an “imminent Israeli action.”

Rubio’s comments alarmed both Democrats in Congress, who argue that only lawmakers can authorise war, and some of Trump’s own supporters when he said Washington knew an Israeli operation was imminent and believed Iranian forces would retaliate against American targets.

In response, White House officials, including Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, pushed back publicly, stating that the president ordered the strikes because Iran was not seriously engaging in negotiations over its nuclear programme and because the United States needed to degrade Tehran’s missile capabilities.

At a meeting with Germany’s chancellor, Trump said he believed Iran was “going to attack first” and that pre-emptive action was necessary to protect American forces. He suggested that, if anything, his decisions may have “forced Israel’s hand,” emphasising that the US was acting independently based on its own threat assessments.

The mixed messaging has drawn criticism from some lawmakers and commentators, who say the administration’s explanations raise questions about the rationale for entering the conflict and whether Congress was appropriately consulted.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to unfold in the Middle East, with air and missile strikes exchanged and regional tensions remaining high.
