Tragedy in Borno: ISWAP Ambush Claims Lives of Six Soldiers and Four CJTF Members

A deadly attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly left six Nigerian soldiers and four members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) dead in Borno State. The incident occurred on Monday, February 16, 2026, marking another violent encounter in the ongoing struggle against insurgency in Nigeria's Northeast region.
According to security reports, the troops and local vigilantes were caught in an ambush while on a routine patrol or operation in a volatile part of the state. The insurgents, who have continued to utilize tactics despite sustained military offensives, reportedly launched a heavy onslaught that overwhelmed the security team. In addition to the casualties, several others were injured, and some military hardware was allegedly carted away by the terrorists.
The Civilian JTF, a group of local volunteers who work alongside the military to protect their communities, has once again paid a heavy price in their commitment to restoring peace in the region.
The loss of these ten personnel is a somber reminder of the persistent threats faced by those on the frontlines of the nation’s security efforts.
As our security forces continue to face these deadly ambushes, what more can be done to better protect both soldiers and the local volunteers on the frontlines? Share your thoughts and comments below.
