Senate Urges Tinubu to Establish Military Barracks in Katsina After Renewed Bandit Attacks

The Senate has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently approve the establishment of a permanent military barracks in Katsina State following fresh bandit attacks that left many residents dead and communities shaken.
The call was made during plenary in Abuja after lawmakers raised alarm over the worsening security situation in the Funtua Zone of the state. Senators disclosed that recent attacks across several local government areas reportedly claimed about 35 lives within a 24-hour period, underscoring the need for stronger and more sustained security measures.
Lawmakers argued that a permanent military presence would help curb the recurring violence and protect vulnerable communities. They reminded the Federal Government of earlier assurances to improve security infrastructure in the area and stressed that temporary deployments had not been sufficient to deter armed groups.
In addition to the proposed barracks, the Senate urged enhanced support for security agencies operating in the state, including improved equipment and logistics for the police. Senators also appealed for immediate humanitarian assistance for victims and affected families, calling on relevant federal agencies to provide relief materials and support.
Contributing to the debate, some lawmakers cautioned against negotiating with bandits, warning that such engagements could embolden criminal groups and undermine ongoing security operations.
The resolution reflects growing concern within the National Assembly over persistent banditry in northern Nigeria and the urgent need for long-term solutions to restore peace and stability in affected states.
