The Super Eagles have expressed grief over the death of former Nigerian international Henry Nwosu, a member of the historic team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a message posted on the national team’s official X platform on Saturday, the team extended condolences to the family of the late midfielder and honoured his contribution to Nigerian football.
“We commiserate with the family of Henry Nwosu on his passing. A member of Nigeria’s historic squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations. Rest in peace,” the statement read.
Nwosu, who died at the age of 62, was the youngest member of the Green Eagles squad that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title on home soil in 1980, a milestone that cemented his place in the country’s football history.
The Imo State-born midfielder was widely recognised for his vision, creativity and technical ability during his playing career and later remained active in the sport as a coach and mentor to younger players.
His death was announced by former teammate and fellow 1980 AFCON winner Segun Odegbami, who revealed that Nwosu died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja after spending several days receiving treatment.
