South Africa, Xenophobia, Cash Rewards, Undocumented Migrants, Report

The South African government has dismissed online claims suggesting that citizens would receive financial rewards for reporting undocumented foreign nationals, describing the circulating notice as false.

In an official statement, the Department of Home Affairs clarified that neither the department nor the Minister of Home Affairs operates any reward scheme linked to immigration reporting. Authorities urged the public to confirm information through verified government channels before sharing content online.

The clarification comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration in South Africa, where concerns over xenophobia and attacks targeting foreign nationals have continued to attract attention across the region.

Reports indicate that some affected foreign residents, including Nigerians, have sought assistance to return home after disruptions to their lives and livelihoods.

Officials emphasised that responsible information sharing and respect for legal processes remain essential in preventing panic and misinformation.
