FIDE Official's Death After Nigeria Trip Sparks Malaria Concerns Among Media Outlets

Russian chess administrator Sergei Indeikin, an operational manager with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), has died aged 36 following what his family believe was a severe case of malaria contracted while working in Nigeria.

Indeikin travelled to Abuja in early August to help run the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, held from 1 to 8 August. According to Russian outlets AIF and Lenta.ru, he began feeling unwell shortly after, first in Uzbekistan and then back in Russia, where his condition rapidly worsened.

His father, Alexander, told AIF that his son had been vaccinated before travelling but understood the jab wouldn't offer complete protection. His mother, Tatiana, described the illness to Izvestia as extremely fast-moving and severe, saying he was hospitalised in Perm but could not be saved. Russian medical expert Professor Alexander Lukashev noted that malaria spreads via mosquito bites common in tropical regions such as Nigeria.

FIDE confirmed Indeikin's death on 23 August, attributing it only to a "sudden illness" without officially naming malaria as the cause. He had worked with the federation since 2021, helping organise major tournaments including World Championships and Candidates events, and is survived by his wife and daughter.
