Safety Commission Orders Mandatory Elevator Certification in Lagos Before March 31

The Lagos State Government has directed building owners, developers and facility managers to register and certify all elevators in their buildings before March 31, 2026, warning that non-compliance could lead to the shutdown of such facilities.
The directive was announced by the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, who said the move is part of efforts to strengthen safety standards as the state witnesses a rise in high-rise developments.
Mojola explained that elevators and other vertical transportation systems are vital components of urban infrastructure and must be properly registered and maintained to ensure public safety.
Under the state’s safety regulations, elevators in residential, commercial and public buildings must be officially registered and certified before being used and must continue to undergo periodic safety inspections throughout their operational lifespan.
He warned that buildings that fail to comply with the directive risk having their elevators shut down and their premises sealed by authorities.
To ease compliance, the government has introduced a digital registration platform where owners can register installations and schedule inspections. The platform will also allow authorities to conduct safety audits on existing elevators.
Mojola further encouraged residents and office workers to support the initiative by reporting faulty or poorly maintained elevators to the commission through its safety hotlines.
The safety directive follows recent concerns about elevator incidents in the state, including reports of residents being trapped in a lift at an apartment building in Banana Island earlier in the week.
