The Lagos State Government has urged residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding as the 2026 rainy season approaches. The warning was issued by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a briefing on the Seasonal Climate Prediction in Alausa.
According to Wahab, forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicate that the state will experience above-normal rainfall levels, with the rainy season likely to start as early as the last week of March and extend until early December.
He noted that the state could record an average rainfall of about 1,965mm, with rainfall onset in the Ikeja division expected around March 31 and cessation around December 2. The heavy rains may trigger flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt daily activities.
The commissioner warned that strong winds at the beginning and end of the rainy season could pose risks to lives and property, potentially leading to flight delays, property damage and disruptions to business activities.
Authorities also advised residents to take precautionary measures, including clearing blocked drainage systems and avoiding construction that obstructs waterways, as part of efforts to reduce flooding risks across the state.
Recent incidents of heavy rainfall have already caused temporary flooding and traffic disruptions in areas such as Lekki, showing the need for preparedness during the rainy season.
The commissioner also urged residents living along flood plains and drainage channels in areas such as Owode, Iwaya, Makoko, Badia, Ijora, Isaalu, Pota and Shibiri to stay alert and be ready to relocate to safer, higher ground whenever necessary.
He further advised motorists to drive cautiously and adhere strictly to speed limits during the rainy season to minimise the risk of road accidents.
