A former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Worldwide, Udengs Eradiri, has criticised calls for the cancellation of the oil and gas surveillance contract awarded to Tantita Security Services Limited, owned by former Niger Delta agitator Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo).
Eradiri urged President Bola Tinubu to ignore those advocating the termination of the contract, describing them as individuals who do not have the country’s best interests at heart.
He argued that such calls were being pushed by “unprogressive elements” and conflict merchants who allegedly want to return the Niger Delta to the era of illegal oil bunkering, violence and instability.
The former Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youths and later Environment maintained that the surveillance contract has helped stabilise the region and improve the security of oil and gas facilities. According to him, the initiative has contributed to the restoration of peace and the improvement of Nigeria’s oil production.
Eradiri added that before the contract was awarded, groups such as the Ijaw Youths Council and the Ijaw National Congress had consistently demanded that local communities be involved in protecting oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta.
He also stated that the activities of Tantita Security Services have helped attract investment and create employment opportunities in the region.
