Authorities in Rivers State have sealed the Obio/Akpor International Market, popularly called Amaechi Market, after a trader, identified as Ejike, was stabbed to death during a fight over N500.
The incident occurred on Sunday along SARS Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, when more than 20 suspected meat sellers allegedly attacked the victim with daggers. An eyewitness said another man who attempted to rescue him was stabbed in the ribs and is currently in critical condition.
The killing triggered a protest on Monday, with female traders storming the council secretariat, accusing the group of repeated violence, theft, and drug peddling in the market. They demanded the attackers be removed permanently to restore safety.
Market Chairman, C.P. Oburu, confirmed Ejike died at the hospital, adding that security agencies have made arrests and the market will remain closed pending further investigation.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said tactical teams have been deployed and an investigation is ongoing to arrest all suspects.
The incident comes weeks after a similar stabbing over a debt in Delta State, raising fresh concerns over rising violence linked to minor disputes.
