Apapa Customs Launches Electronic Cargo Tracking to Boost Security

The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Area Command, has introduced an Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) to improve national security, prevent cargo diversion, and strengthen trade efficiency across the country’s ports.
The command’s spokesperson, Tunde Ayagbalo, said the pilot phase was successfully carried out on a container bound for Kano/Jigawa on November 5, marking the first real-time deployment of the system.
Customs Area Controller, Emmanuel Oshoba, described the ECTS as a major step forward, noting that electronic seals and handheld devices now allow officers to monitor containers from departure to arrival. This eliminates tampering, reduces diversion risks, and removes the need for physical escorts.
Oshoba also commended Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for driving innovation in line with modern global port standards, especially after assuming chairmanship of the World Customs Organisation.
Officers involved in the rollout have undergone specialised training to ensure smooth operation. The system also features multiple secure unlocking methods, including remote control, authorised handheld devices, and a physical card at the destination.
The Apapa Command, Nigeria’s busiest seaport and a major revenue hub, says the initiative will boost cargo integrity, strengthen security, and support national revenue protection.
