One Million Out-of-school Children

The Federal Government plans to reintegrate over one million out-of-school children into the formal education system across Nigeria, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced on Wednesday at the 69th National Council on Education Summit in Akure, Ondo State.

Alausa said the initiative is being carried out with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, which has mapped children from 12,600 communities nationwide. The programme targets children aged seven to nine, who will be enrolled in low-cost private schools and learning centres.

So far, over 21,000 children have been identified across the FCT and handed over for enrolment. The ministry has also set up 109 functional learning centres and transit schools, enrolling 15,224 learners to date.

Alausa said the ministry formed a task force with UBEC and other education commissions to document the scale of the problem and drive enrolment.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, praised ongoing reforms, saying education remained a tool for unity and social mobility. He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s Education Loan Fund, which he said had supported over 624,000 students nationwide.
