The Benue State Police Command says it has begun investigating renewed attacks in Ado and Ohinmini Local Government Areas, where at least five people were killed between Monday and Tuesday. Police spokesperson, Udeme Edet, confirmed that officers have been deployed and investigations are underway.
Armed herders reportedly invaded Rijo community in Ado LGA on Tuesday evening, killing a farmer and barber identified as Thomas Edeh. Residents fled as several people went missing. Community leaders said Edeh had repeatedly complained about his crops being stolen before he was shot dead on his farm.
Another attack in Ohinmini LGA left four people dead. The council chairman, Adole Gabriel, said the incident had been reported to security agencies and the state government, adding that troops have been deployed.
Deputy Speaker of the Benue Assembly, Mrs. Lami Danladi Ogenyi, condemned the killings and urged security agencies to protect residents. The latest violence comes despite earlier deployments ordered by President Bola Tinubu after more than 200 people were killed in Yelwata.
The renewed attacks, which started in Logo LGA before spreading to Ado and Ohinmini, have heightened fears among farming communities.
