Petrol Prices Projected to Hit N1,400 as Dangote Refinery Faces Loading Delays

Dangote Refinery

Nigerians are facing the prospect of yet another massive hike in energy costs, with projections suggesting that the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) could soar to N1,400 per liter. The facility, which many hoped would provide a permanent solution to the nation’s fuel scarcity and pricing volatility, is currently experiencing logistical and technical delays that have stalled the distribution of products to marketers.

The stall in loading has created an immediate supply vacuum in the market, forcing many independent stations to hike their prices even further to manage dwindling stocks. If the distribution issues are not resolved within the week, the landing cost of fuel—compounded by the current global crude price of over $100 per barrel—will leave retailers with no choice but to adjust the pump price toward the N1,400 mark.

The situation has placed the federal government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) under intense pressure to intervene. While the Dangote Refinery was expected to reduce the nation's reliance on expensive imports and save foreign exchange, these operational hiccups have highlighted the fragility of relying on a single major supplier. As citizens brace for the possibility of a 40% increase in fuel costs in a matter of days, concerns are mounting over the inevitable ripple effect on food prices, transportation, and the general cost of living.

Do you think Nigeria should have waited for the refineries to be fully operational before removing the subsidy, or are these just the growing pains of a truly deregulated market? Share your comments below!
