Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has reassured distraught parents of the pupils and staff kidnapped from St Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State, that the abducted schoolchildren are in good condition and will soon return home. Ribadu delivered this message during a solidarity visit to the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese and the families still waiting for news of their loved ones following the mass abduction on November 21, 2025, in which gunmen seized more than 300 people.

In his address, Ribadu said the federal government, under the directive of President Bola Tinubu, is deeply concerned about the situation and has intensified efforts to secure the safe release of the students and teachers. He stressed that the victims “are doing fine and will be back soon,” emphasising that security agencies are working around the clock in the rescue mission. He also urged parents and community members to remain hopeful and united in prayer and support during this difficult time.

At least 50 pupils managed to escape shortly after the attack, and later reports confirmed the release of some abducted students, but many parents still anxiously await the return of others. Ribadu’s assurance was delivered in the context of this ongoing rescue effort, which continues to attract national attention as part of Nigeria’sbroader struggle against banditry and mass kidnappings.

The St Mary’s abduction is one of the deadliest school kidnappings in Nigeria in recent years, echoing past crises that have shaken communities and highlighted persistent insecurity. What do you think should be done to protect students and ensure the safe return of all kidnapped schoolchildren in Nigeria? Comment below and share your thoughts.
