The political tension in Rivers State has reached a boiling point as the State House of Assembly officially began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. During a rowdy session on Friday morning, the lawmakers loyal to the former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, moved a motion to serve an impeachment notice on the Governor. This development follows months of heavy fighting between Governor Fubara and the members of the Assembly, which has completely divided the state's political leadership.
The lawmakers listed several allegations against the Governor as the basis for their action, including claims of gross misconduct and violation of the constitution. Security has been tightened around the Assembly complex and the Government House in Port Harcourt to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Many residents are worried that this move will lead to further chaos in the state, as supporters of the Governor have already started gathering to protest the decision. The Assembly has directed its clerk to communicate the notice to the Governor, marking the official start of the legal process to remove him from office.
For now, all eyes are on the judiciary and the people of Rivers State to see how they will react to this latest attempt to change the government.
