Nollywood actress-turned-politician Funke Adesiyan has officially withdrawn from the race for the House of Representatives seat representing Ibadan South-East/North-East Federal Constituency in Oyo State.
In a letter dated 24 April 2026 and addressed to the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, Adesiyan described her decision as both “personal and deliberate.” The announcement, which she later shared publicly via Facebook, followed what she termed “careful reflection and high-level consultations.”
According to her, the move was guided by a broader assessment of the political landscape and her long-term commitment to credibility and purposeful service. While stepping away from the race, she emphasised that her dedication to the development of Oyo State and Nigeria remains unchanged.
Adesiyan also expressed appreciation to her supporters and political stakeholders who backed her ambition. She noted that the encouragement she received across different levels played a significant role in her journey, even as she chose to step back at this stage.
Her withdrawal comes at a time when political alignments and recalibrations are intensifying ahead of future elections. Observers suggest that such decisions often reflect strategic repositioning rather than a complete exit from the political scene.
By stepping down, Adesiyan hinted at exploring “other strategic avenues” to contribute to societal development, signalling that her influence may continue outside elective office for now.
Her decision raises fresh conversations about the intersection of entertainment and politics in Nigeria, and the challenges public figures face when transitioning into governance roles.
