Lagos 2027: Deputy Governor Hamzat’s Ambition Surges as Key APC Leaders Align

Governor Hamzat Obafemi

The race to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027 has taken a definitive turn as the governorship bid of the current Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, gained major momentum. High-ranking members within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the State Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, have reportedly signaled their support for his candidacy.

Dr. Hamzat, a core member of the state’s intellectual and political elite, has long been viewed as a natural successor due to his deep involvement in the state’s developmental master plan and his loyalty to the party's leadership structure. The public backing from Obasa is particularly noteworthy, as the Speaker has often been considered a heavyweight contender himself, signaling a possible internal consensus to avoid a fractious primary.

While the formal primary is still a year away, the early alignment of the party's "alphabet soup" of leadership—from the legislative arm to the state executive committee—indicates that the APC is looking to clear the field early. Supporters of the Deputy Governor cite his technical expertise and his "gentlemanly" approach to governance as the primary reasons he is the best fit to lead the nation’s commercial hub.

The development is expected to trigger further realignments across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the coming weeks. As the "Hamzat for Governor" movement transitions from a whisper to a fully operational campaign, all eyes are now on how other potential aspirants within the party will react to this sudden surge in his political stock.

Do you think Dr. Hamzat’s experience as Deputy Governor makes him the inevitable choice for 2027, or should the APC still look toward a fresh face to lead Lagos? Share your comments below!
