The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally transmitted the name of Murtala Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
The nomination was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who said the move was made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers a governor to fill a vacancy in the office of deputy governor.
According to the statement, the position became vacant following the voluntary resignation of former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.
The governor reportedly said the nomination followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the state, reflecting efforts to ensure continuity in governance and stability within the administration.
Murtala Garo, the nominee, is a seasoned politician with years of experience in both elective and appointed offices. He previously served as Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Special Adviser to the Kano State Government. He also held the position of State Organising Secretary of his political party and was the deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.
The Kano State House of Assembly is expected to commence screening and confirmation proceedings in the coming days, in line with constitutional provisions.
If confirmed, Garo will officially assume the role of Deputy Governor, helping to stabilise the state’s executive leadership structure at a politically significant time.
