Bauchi Sets April 24 Deadline for Appointees Seeking Elective Office to Resign

The Bauchi State Government has directed all political appointees intending to contest in upcoming party primaries to resign their positions on or before Friday, April 24, 2026, in compliance with electoral laws.
The directive was issued in a statement by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Bala Mohammed. According to the statement, the move aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 governing the participation of public office holders in electoral processes.
Gidado noted that the decision is aimed at ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements and promoting transparency as political activities begin to intensify ahead of party primaries.
He added that affected appointees are required not only to step down but also to properly hand over all government property and official responsibilities to designated officers within their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
While acknowledging the contributions of those impacted by the directive, the state government expressed appreciation for their service and wished them success in their political ambitions.
The development reflects broader efforts across Nigeria’s political space to enforce legal provisions guiding elections and prevent conflicts of interest among public officials seeking elective office.
With the resignation deadline fast approaching, attention now turns to how many appointees will comply and how the move may reshape the political landscape in Bauchi State ahead of the primaries.
