A newborn baby has been rescued alive after spending 32 hours trapped beneath the rubble caused by the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela’s northern coastal region.
The infant, reported to be only 18 days old, was found in the severely affected city of La Guaira after rescue teams continued overnight operations under floodlights. Footage circulating online showed emergency responders carefully lifting the child from collapsed debris and passing the baby safely through a line of rescuers before carrying out preliminary medical checks.
According to information shared by social media user Andreina Quintero, the child appeared unharmed despite being trapped for more than a day. Reports also indicated that the baby’s mother had been rescued approximately one hour earlier and later reunited with the infant at a medical facility.
Medical personnel attending to the mother suggested that the baby may have survived because the mother shielded the child with her body or created a protective space during the collapse.
The rescue has become a rare moment of hope amid a national tragedy.
Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5. The back-to-back seismic events caused widespread destruction, leaving buildings collapsed, thousands injured, and many families displaced.
Authorities reported that at least 920 people lost their lives, while search-and-rescue operations continue across affected communities as emergency teams work to locate survivors.
