NEMSA, EEDC, Fix 31 Faulty Power Lines

The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency has intensified nationwide inspection, testing, and certification of power installations to boost safety and reliability under the Electricity Act 2023.

During recent field operations, NEMSA inspectors uncovered 31 critical safety defects on the Afikpo 33kV feeder and Nibo Injection Substation operated by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company in Ebonyi State.

The defects included vegetation encroachment, right-of-way violations, broken cross-arms, undersized conductors and dangerously aged overhead lines running over homes and businesses. EEDC has been given four weeks to correct all faults to avert potential hazards.

NEMSA also inspected and tested transformers in Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto to ensure they meet technical standards before commissioning, a move aimed at reducing transformer failures and supply interruptions linked to substandard equipment.

Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Aliyu Tahir, said no installation will be energised until it is certified safe, noting that the agency has strengthened its 21 inspectorate offices nationwide.

Meanwhile, the National Meter Test Station in Port Harcourt completed bi-annual verification of metering equipment to improve billing accuracy and consumer trust.
