NDLEA Uncovers New Cannabis Variant ‘California Loud’ in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed the discovery of a new and highly potent strain of cannabis known as “California Loud” in Lagos. The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this during a live television appearance where he described the strain as much stronger than traditional cannabis found locally. According to him, the new variant poses a significant challenge to Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign because of its higher tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content and intense psychoactive effects.
Babafemi explained that “California Loud” was first intercepted during NDLEA’s ongoing raids across Lagos. The drug is believed to have originated from the United States and is being smuggled into Nigeria through courier services and concealed shipments. The NDLEA spokesperson noted that the agency has been monitoring an increase in synthetic and imported drug variants, many of which are now being consumed by young Nigerians at private parties, nightclubs, and lounges in urban centres. He added that such strains are often branded and marketed on social media to appeal to wealthy users and entertainers, making enforcement more complex.
The agency’s investigations also linked the emergence of “California Loud” to an expanding network of traffickers who exploit Nigeria’s ports and airports to distribute the drug. Recent operations led to the dismantling of several laboratories in Lagos where synthetic cannabis, “Colos”, and other designer drugs were being produced. Babafemi stressed that the NDLEA is increasing its surveillance at major entry points, particularly Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Apapa Port, to stop the inflow of foreign drugs. He also appealed to community leaders, parents, and entertainers to join efforts in discouraging the glamorisation of drug use.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), has directed all state commands to intensify monitoring of high-risk areas and collaborate with international partners to trace the origins of the new strain. The agency says offenders found importing or selling the variant will face prosecution under Nigeria’s drug control laws.
