The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its crackdown on narcotics in Kano State with a successful raid on Monday, May 4, 2026, targeting the vicinity of the old Bayero University Kano (BUK) site. Operating under the strategic command of Commander D.Y. Lawal, the agency arrested six suspects and dismantled several notorious drug spots that had become a source of insecurity for the academic community and surrounding residents.
According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the operation—codenamed Operation Sharar Mafaka—was launched in response to a formal complaint from the university management. The institution had raised alarms over trespassers who were allegedly utilizing parts of the campus and its immediate environs for the sale and consumption of illegal substances. In addition to the arrests, NDLEA officers seized and destroyed various items linked to the illicit activities.
Commander Lawal emphasized that the agency will not tolerate the use of educational or government facilities as havens for drug peddling. He reiterated the command's commitment to "dislodge and occupy" all known drug joints across the state to ensure a safe environment for students and staff. The agency also commended the BUK management for its proactive stance, noting that such collaboration is essential for identifying and eliminating threats to public safety.
The NDLEA has urged other institutions and members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities within their neighborhoods. With Operation Sharar Mafaka in full swing, the agency maintains that it will continue to sustain the pressure on drug cartels and local distributors to keep the state drug-free.
Do you believe that increased security collaboration between universities and law enforcement is the most effective way to keep campuses drug-free, or should the focus be on student counseling and rehabilitation? Share your comments below!
