NAFDAC Seals Chinese Supermarkets in Abuja Over Unregistered & Harmful Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Abuja, along with placing eight other shops in Wuse market on hold, following raids that uncovered a trove of unregistered and potentially harmful products.
Officials discovered food items labelled exclusively in Chinese (without English translations), cosmetics lacking proper registration, body-enhancement creams, drugs for breast and buttock enlargement, and aphrodisiac pills made with suspicious chemical compositions.
The Enforcement Unit, led by Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, stated that the market value of seized items is estimated at ₦170 million. He explained that some sellers had presented themselves as “doctors” or “pharmacists” prescribing these products to unsuspecting Nigerians.
Godiya affirmed that the raids were initiated after consumer complaints and intelligence reports. Stores were found operating without NAFDAC approval, and warehouses could not be fully evacuated, prompting authorities to place entire sections on hold for further investigation.
NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to be vigilant about what they purchase, especially products with foreign labels, and avoid items whose safety and quality have not been verified.
