NAFDAC, Lagos Trade Fair Raid

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has condemned a violent attack on its enforcement team during a regulatory operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex on October 30.

The officials, led by the Director of Investigation and Enforcement and Chairman of the Federal Task Force, were carrying out a routine exercise targeting fake, banned, and substandard products.

According to a statement by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, the operation was progressing smoothly until armed thugs disrupted the raid and vandalised around 10 operational vehicles belonging to NAFDAC and other supporting security agencies.

The agency said credible intelligence suggested the assault was pre-planned and aimed at harming senior officials. It also alleged that the market’s chief security officer ordered gates to be locked, trapping the enforcement team during the attack.

Before the disruption, several cartons of counterfeit and unwholesome food and drug products had been seized in compliance with the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act. Police and military personnel intervened to prevent casualties.

NAFDAC insists it will not be intimidated and confirmed that over 80 containers of illegal products have recently been destroyed in similar enforcement actions.
