Melania Trump to Chair UN Security Council Session as Tensions With Iran Escalate

First Lady Melania Trump is set to make history by chairing a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, March 2, 2026, as the United States assumes the rotating presidency of the 15-nation body. This will be the first time a U.S. first lady, or any sitting head of state’s spouse, has presided over a Security Council session.
Her office says the meeting will focus on education’s role in promoting tolerance and peace in conflict zones, under the theme “Children, Technology and Education in Conflict.” Officials hope the session will emphasise the importance of protecting young people and fostering stability in areas affected by war.
The decision comes at a tense moment on the international stage, with a major flare-up of conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Emergency meetings of the Security Council have already been held in recent days following airstrikes and military exchanges, with world leaders warning of the risk of a wider regional confrontation and calling for diplomatic solutions.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has cautioned that the recent strikes on Iranian territory and ensuing counterattacks could ignite a broader conflict if de-escalation efforts fail. He urged member states to work towards negotiations and a halt to hostilities.
Diplomats and analysts note that Mrs Trump’s role is largely ceremonial: the rotating presidency allows the U.S. to set the agenda and lead the meeting, but it does not give her decision-making authority over Security Council resolutions. Nevertheless, the moment is seen as notable for its symbolic break from tradition in a body usually chaired by ambassadors or senior government ministers.
As the Security Council session approaches, global attention remains fixed on efforts to manage the widening conflict and to find pathways to peace.
