6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Japan’s Remote Volcano Islands

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Japan’s Volcano Islands on Monday, according to seismic data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The powerful tremor occurred at around 12:55 pm local time (03:55 GMT) close to the Volcano Islands, a group of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean administered by Tokyo and located roughly 1 250 km (780 miles) from the capital.
Despite the strength of the quake, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and the USGS did not issue a tsunami warning following the event.
The Volcano Islands are largely uninhabited apart from a small military garrison on Iwo Jima, known historically for its role in World War II.
Seismic activity is relatively common around Japan due to its position along multiple tectonic plate boundaries, but authorities and residents of larger populated areas remained on alert for any further aftershocks.
