“Make Yourself Available” — EFCC Summons Ex-Gov Timipre Sylva Over Alleged $14.86m Fraud Following APC Resignation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a fresh directive calling on former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, to present himself immediately for questioning over an alleged $14.86 million fraud.
The anti-graft agency's call was issued by its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, following public comments and a official resignation letter from Sylva, who formally exited the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Responding to Sylva’s allegations that the commission operates more as a political wing of the ruling party than an independent institution, the EFCC reaffirmed that the former governor remains a wanted suspect and must surrender himself to law enforcement.

In his resignation notice dated August 31, 2026, Sylva accused the leadership of the APC of derailing from its founding principles and failing to deliver on the expectations of Nigerians. He explicitly copied the EFCC in his resignation letter, alleging that he anticipates an intensified political witch-hunt following his departure from the party.

According to reports, Sylva was declared wanted in late 2025 over the alleged $14.86 million money laundering and dishonest conversion case. He also faces separate charges alongside ongoing judicial proceedings, though he has consistently denied all allegations.
