“Keep Faith Out of Politics” — Deji Adeyanju Hits Peter Obi Over Church Visits Ahead of 2027

Human rights activist and legal practitioner Deji Adeyanju has strongly condemned the use of religious places of worship for political mobilization, warning that leveraging faith for political gain threatens national unity. Speaking in a statement on Tuesday, Adeyanju specifically faulted former presidential candidate Peter Obi for his renewed patronage of churches ahead of the 2027 general elections, while also knocking political leaders who organize clerics to endorse President Bola Tinubu.
Adeyanju argued that electoral contests should center on policy, governance, and competing visions for development rather than religious sentiment.

“Elections should be about ideas, policies and competing visions for Nigeria. Religion and politics should never be allowed to become instruments of division. The gathering of religious clerics by a governor last week to endorse Tinubu is condemnable, just as it is troubling to see Peter Obi appearing to return to the same politics of religious mobilisation that divided Nigerians in 2023.”

The activist called on pastors and religious leaders across the country to protect the sanctity of their pulpits by refusing to offer political platforms to politicians, urging political actors to respect the law and focus on issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 cycle.
