“Like Brazil and Spain”: Coach Kalika Says Nigeria’s Absence Diminishes the 2026 World Cup

As the global football community gears up for the 2026 World Cup, former Super Eagles assistant coach, Jo Bonfrere’s right-hand man, Ton Kalika, has lamented the absence of Nigeria from the tournament. In a candid assessment shared on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Kalika argued that a World Cup without the Super Eagles loses a significant portion of its flair and competitive soul.
The veteran tactician compared Nigeria's footballing pedigree to that of global giants like Brazil and Spain, noting that the Super Eagles bring a unique brand of excitement and talent that few other nations can replicate. Nigeria failed to secure a ticket for the 48-team tournament, a result that continues to haunt fans and analysts across the continent.
“Nigeria’s absence affects the tournament deeply. They are like Brazil or Spain in terms of the talent and the excitement they bring to the world stage,” Kalika stated. “When you think of African football at the World Cup, you think of Nigeria. Their absence means the world is missing out on seeing some of the most technical and physical players in the game.”
Kalika, who has a deep understanding of the Nigerian football ecosystem, noted that while other African nations will represent the continent, the "Super Eagles brand" carries a weight that is internationally recognized.
He emphasized that the tournament feels "incomplete" when a powerhouse with such a massive global following and rich history is watching from the sidelines.
For Kalika, the lesson is clear: the football world is better when the Super Eagles are flying high.
Do you agree with Kalika that Nigeria is the "Brazil of Africa," or have other African teams surpassed the Super Eagles? Does the World Cup feel less exciting without Nigeria? Share your comments below!
