LASTMA Mourns Fallen Firefighter, Decries Danger of One-Way Driving in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep sorrow after a traffic crash along the Trade Fair–inward Abule-Ado service lane claimed the life of a firefighter from the Federal Fire Service. The fatal incident reportedly began when a commercial motorcyclist, riding against traffic at high speed, collided with the firefighter as he attempted to cross the expressway. The crash created a chaotic scene that involved a heavily laden truck which failed to brake in time, resulting in the victim’s death.
In response, LASTMA personnel quickly cordoned off the area and alerted the authorities. The truck involved was impounded and handed to the police for full investigation, while the fire service removed the firefighter’s body using an official ambulance from the Trade Fair Complex. Both the motorcyclist and the truck driver reportedly fled the scene.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the tragedy as yet another grim reminder of the fatal consequences of ignoring traffic laws. He issued a strong warning to motorists and commercial motorcyclists against driving against traffic, describing such behaviour as reckless and capable of causing avoidable deaths. LASTMA renewed its commitment to enforcing traffic rules, encouraging compliance with road signs and speed limits to protect lives across Lagos State.
