The Kogi State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the killing of a young graduate, Aminu Lawal, who was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Lawal, a graduate of the University of Maiduguri, was reportedly murdered in Lokoja after being declared missing on 18 March 2026. He had left his residence in Otokiti Estate to operate his commercial tricycle but failed to return home, prompting an immediate search by his family.
His body was discovered the following day in a bush path opposite the Central Bank area in Zone 8, Lokoja, sending shockwaves through the community.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, family members and friends, who have called for justice while raising concerns over alleged pressure to release a suspect already arrested in connection with the case.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, stated that investigations are ongoing and dismissed claims that the command was under pressure to compromise the case. She assured that the matter would be pursued thoroughly and that findings would be made public.
Further reports indicate that the suspect, identified as an acquaintance of the deceased, was apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps before the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The tragic killing has deepened grief within the community, with residents demanding a transparent and timely investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
