The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, has recovered a suspected stolen vehicle in Anambra State, highlighting the effectiveness of technology-driven crime detection systems.
The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, was recovered on April 4, 2026, at the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Desk Office in Nnewi during a routine verification process.
According to the FRSC, suspicion was raised when inconsistencies were detected in the vehicle’s chassis number during an attempt to process proof-of-ownership documents. Further checks and physical inspection confirmed discrepancies, prompting a deeper investigation.
The verification process revealed that the car originally belonged to Onyechi Dickson, who disclosed that it had been stolen during a kidnapping incident in January 2023.
Following the discovery, the FRSC alerted the police in Nnewi, leading to the involvement of the State Criminal Investigation Bureau. A coordinated operation involving the FRSC, police, and the Motor Licensing Authority resulted in the arrest of the applicant and an agent linked to the fraudulent documentation.
Investigations further showed that the vehicle had been deliberately altered to evade detection, including a change in colour from red to grey and the use of an unassigned number plate.
The recovered vehicle is currently in police custody for further investigation, while authorities emphasised that the case demonstrates the growing role of the NVIS platform in tackling vehicle theft and enhancing national security.
Officials also urged members of the public to verify vehicle documents thoroughly before purchase and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in curbing vehicle-related crimes.
