In a significant blend of Nollywood stardom and traditional heritage, veteran actor and director Prince Jide Kosoko has been formally declared the Oloja of Lagos-elect. The announcement was made on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the King Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island, filling a stool that has been vacant since the passing of Chief Adebola Ige in December 2017.
The 72-year-old actor, who hails from the illustrious King Kosoko Royal Family, was presented to hundreds of family members by the Olori Ebi General, Mrs. Mutiat Ali-Balogun. In a symbolic gesture of affirmation, his hand was raised before the assembly, accompanied by traditional rites and prayers.

He must undergo formal rites at the King Kosoko Palace

The final authority rests with the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, who will perform the traditional "capping" ceremony in line with state protocols.

Many see his emergence as a bridge between Lagos’ rich ancestral history and its modern cultural influence.

A rival branch of the dynasty, the Akinsanya Olojo Family, has raised objections. They contend that Abiola Olojo-Kosoko was selected as the Oloja-elect as far back as December 2020 and have petitioned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene.

Despite the ongoing family debate, the atmosphere at the Ereko palace was one of celebration as the "African Giant" of the screen prepares to take on his most significant real-life role yet—as a custodian of Lagosian tradition.

Do you think Jide Kosoko’s fame will help bring more global attention to Lagosian traditions, or should traditional stools be kept separate from celebrity life? Share your comments below!
