Insecurity: Recruiting more policemen can only add to problems says Udensi

Insecurity

Chikwe Udensi, a systems consultant at the Interpol National Central Bureau, has voiced strong concern about the Federal Government’s plan to recruit more police officers as a response to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. In a statement that has drawn national attention, Udensi warned that simply hiring additional policemen will not solve deep-rooted security challenges and could potentially worsen existing problems if other systemic issues are not addressed first. His comments come as the government prepares to open recruitment for tens of thousands of new security personnel.

President Bola Tinubu has approved a major recruitment drive that will bring in more than 94,000 new security workers across the Nigeria Police Force, paramilitary services and the armed forces, including 50,000 police constables set to be enlisted between mid-December 2025 and late January 2026. Officials say this push aims to strengthen community policing and widen the manpower base to combat rising crime.

Some recent reports suggest that training institutions themselves are in poor condition, which could undermine the quality of new officers if not addressed.
