Immigration, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Trade Barbs Over Passport Drama

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan are locked in a public clash following the temporary seizure of the lawmaker’s passport at the Abuja airport. According to reports, the NIS held Akpoti’s travel document on Tuesday, citing “security orders,” which led to her being delayed for an international flight.
Akpoti accused the immigration officers of “grabbing” her passport unlawfully and demanded to know the legal basis of their action. She maintained that she was ready to travel and that she has full rights as a senator to movement. On the other hand, the NIS claimed the action was part of routine security checks but did not provide detailed explanation publicly.
The incident stirred controversy on social media and in political circles, with many observers questioning whether the action was politically motivated. Akpoti hinted at possible harassment, while immigration officials held that their primary concern is national security rather than individual’s rights. The specific security order used to justify the passport hold has not been disclosed.
The outcome remains unresolved as of now, with Akpoti demanding a formal apology and explanation, and the NIS indicating that the passport has been released after the hold. What are your thoughts on this development? Do you believe the passport seizure was justified, or does it raise concerns about political interference and rights protection?
