“I’d Like a Little Bit of Respect”: Mourinho Blasts Critics After Benfica’s Champions League Thriller with Real Madrid

In a trademark display of defiance, José Mourinho has hit back at his detractors following Benfica’s pulsating UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid. Speaking to the press on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the "Special One" demanded more appreciation for his tactical approach and his team’s performance in what many are already calling the match of the tournament.
The high-stakes encounter saw momentum swing wildly between the Portuguese giants and the record-holding Spaniards, left fans breathless. However, despite the entertaining nature of the game, some pundits and sections of the media criticized Mourinho’s defensive adjustments during the latter stages of the match.
Unsurprisingly, Mourinho did not take the criticism lightly. He pointed to his extensive trophy cabinet and his ability to compete with the world's most expensive squads as proof that his methods remain elite.
“I’ve won 26 trophies in my career. I’ve won the Champions League with two different clubs. And yet, I still hear the same stories,” Mourinho remarked. “We played against a team of ‘Galacticos,’ we fought until the last second, and we showed the world that Benfica belongs at this level. I’d like a little bit of respect for my players and for the work we are doing here.”
Mourinho emphasized that competing against a club of Real Madrid's stature requires a specific level of pragmatism, arguing that "playing beautiful football" means nothing if it doesn't lead to a result. He praised his squad’s resilience and tactical discipline, insisting that Benfica is proving to be a "dangerous underdog" in this year’s knockout stages.
Is Mourinho right to demand more respect, or has his "Special One" aura faded in the modern game? Can Benfica actually go all the way in the Champions League under his leadership? Share your comments below!
