Marie-Louise Eta has etched her name into football history after becoming the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues, following her appointment as interim head coach of Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

The 34-year-old was handed the role until the end of the season after Union Berlin dismissed former manager Steffen Baumgart in the wake of a 3–1 defeat to bottom-placed FC Heidenheim.

Eta’s appointment marks a landmark moment not only in German football but across Europe’s elite leagues, breaking a long-standing barrier in the male-dominated coaching landscape.

Union Berlin currently sit mid-table in the Bundesliga, but a poor run of form, just two wins in 14 league matches in 2026, prompted the club’s leadership to seek a new direction ahead of the season’s final stretch. With five matches remaining, Eta has been tasked with stabilising results and ensuring the club’s top-flight status.

Club director Horst Heldt noted that the decision was driven by recent performances and the need for a “fresh approach”, adding that there has been overwhelming support for Eta’s appointment among fans.

Eta is no stranger to breaking new ground. In 2023, she became the first woman to serve as an assistant coach in the Bundesliga, and she previously stepped in on a temporary basis during a managerial suspension in 2024.

Although she is set to take charge of Union Berlin’s women’s team on a permanent basis next season, her immediate focus is firmly on guiding the men’s side through a challenging period.

Her appointment follows earlier milestones in women’s involvement in men’s football, including Carolina Morace’s role at Italian club Viterbese in 1999, but Eta’s position at the top level of European football represents an unprecedented step forward.

As Eta prepares for her first match in charge, her rise is widely seen as a significant moment for gender inclusion in football, signalling a gradual shift in opportunities for women within the sport’s highest ranks.
