The basketball world is in a state of shock following the tragic death of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, who passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026. The 29-year-old Canadian-born athlete was found deceased in a home in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles.
The Memphis Grizzlies and Clarke's agency, Priority Sports, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Tuesday, expressing deep devastation. In a heartfelt statement, the Grizzlies described Brandon as an "outstanding teammate and an even better person" whose presence would be sorely missed by the entire Memphis community. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement mourning the loss of a leader who played with "passion and grit," while his former coach at Gonzaga, Mark Few, remembered him for his "kind, gentle, and warm soul."
Brandon Clarke had been a key piece of the Grizzlies' roster since being drafted in 2019, famously finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting. However, his recent seasons were marred by significant injuries, including a torn Achilles in 2023 that limited him to just a handful of games over the last three years. Away from the court, it was revealed that Clarke had been facing legal challenges following an April 2026 arrest in Arkansas involving charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance. As the NBA fraternity pays tribute to the "lover of the game," many are reflecting on his rise from Vancouver to becoming a first-round NBA talent.
