“He is the King”: Burna Boy Declares Fela Kuti the Only Artist Greater Than Him

Burna Boy

Speaking in a viral video shared over the weekend of January 24, 2026, the "African Giant" stated unequivocally that the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, is the only musician he considers his superior.

In a clip originally from a session with American content creator PlaqueBoyMax, Burna was seen vibing to Fela’s classic "Coffin for Head of State" before addressing the camera.

“Fela is the king. He is the only one greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy declared.

This is not the first time Burna Boy has aligned himself with the Kuti lineage—his grandfather, Benson Idonije, was also Fela’s first manager. By naming Fela as his only superior, Burna Boy effectively placed himself above his "Big Three" peers, Wizkid and Davido, while simultaneously paying homage to the man who laid the foundation for the genre.

Do you think Burna Boy is right to place himself as second only to Fela, or are the "Big Three" all on the same level? Should contemporary artists stop comparing themselves to the legend? Share your comments below!
