Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, a prominent presidential aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has firmly stated that he will not step down or withdraw from the party’s 2027 presidential primary race. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the renowned economist and seasoned banker dispelled ongoing rumors of a consensus arrangement that might favor other heavyweights within the party, insisting on a transparent and democratic process to determine the ADC's ticket holder.
Hayatu-Deen’s declaration comes amid intensifying political maneuvering within the ADC, especially following the recent entry of major national figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi into the party's presidential race. Despite the high-profile competition, Hayatu-Deen emphasized that he remains fully committed to his vision of economic reform and national transformation. He pointed out that his entry into the race is driven by a deep desire to rescue millions of Nigerians from poverty and fix the country's critical infrastructure, particularly the failing power sector.

Recalling his withdrawal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary in 2022 due to the heavy influence of money politics, Hayatu-Deen expressed confidence that the ADC offers a fairer playing field. He warned that relying on backroom consensus deals or regional zoning could sideline competent leaders and weaken the democratic process. He urged the party's leadership to prioritize merit, capacity, and character above all else, challenging his fellow contenders to test their popularity directly at the party's upcoming primaries.
With Hayatu-Deen standing his ground, the race for the ADC presidential ticket is shaping up to be one of the most keenly watched contests ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party is seeing an unprecedented influx of prominent opposition leaders, setting the stage for a high-stakes internal battle for the soul of the platform.

Do you think Hayatu-Deen’s insistence on an open primary is the right move for the ADC, or should the party look for a consensus candidate? Please drop your comments below!
