Governor Mutfwang Rejects Claims of Betrayal After Switching Parties in Plateau State

Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has publicly rejected accusations that he betrayed the people of Plateau by leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC. The governor spoke to journalists at the Government House in Jos on February 1, 2026 during an interaction aimed at clarifying his decision following widespread political criticism. Governor Mutfwang insisted his move was in the best interest of the state and not a rejection of the electorate who voted for him in 2023 under the PDP platform. He emphasized that rational voters will appreciate the strategic nature of his decision.
Mutfwang explained that his decision to defect, which was formalized on January 27, 2026, stemmed from ongoing internal challenges within the PDP including unresolved turmoil that he believes compromised the party’s viability as a platform for the 2027 general elections.
The PDP has maintained that he abandoned the very party that brought him to power and urged citizens to hold him accountable for the decision, which they say undermines democratic trust. Party figures have voiced concern that the defection could weaken opposition cohesion in Plateau ahead of the 2027 elections.
Governor Mutfwang, however, reaffirmed his commitment to delivering results for Plateau residents and assured that alignment with the ruling APC will foster stronger cooperation with federal authorities and attract further support for state initiatives.
He stressed that many residents remain supportive and that the focus is on continued development and enhanced collaboration across party lines.
