In a major breakthrough that has brought immense relief to the nation, the Presidency has confirmed the successful rescue of all the remaining schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted from the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The official confirmation was made on Friday, July 10, 2026, by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, bringing a joyful end to a grueling 55-day captivity ordeal.

The victims were initially taken on May 15, 2026, when heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated attack using explosives across three schools—including Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esinle—abducting 46 pupils, teachers, and a school principal. Taking to social media to share the news alongside photos of the freed individuals, Onanuga announced that a joint operation by Nigeria's security agencies successfully secured their release from the dense terrains where they were being held.

"Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies. Mr. President, we are grateful. We understand your commitment to our safety and appreciate all you did for us."

The operation faced severe tactical hurdles, as the kidnappers—revealed to be ideologically motivated insurgents—had planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along migration routes that initially injured members of early rescue teams. The terrorists had attempted to use the children as leverage, demanding the release of detained bomb-makers in exchange for the captives. Following their successful extraction from the Old Oyo National Park axis, the rescued pupils and teachers have been moved into state care to undergo comprehensive medical checks, trauma counseling, and eventual reunification with their families.
