All 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were kidnapped in Imo State have been safely released following a joint operation by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force.
The victims were intercepted by armed men at approximately 6:30 a.m. on October 1, 2026, along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Imo State while traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
Following their release on Wednesday, October 7, the prospective corps members were immediately transported to the DSS Medical Centre in Owerri for medical evaluations and treatment. Addressing the outcome, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma commended security personnel for their operational intervention, explaining that state authorities intentionally maintained information confidentiality during the seven-day ordeal to safeguard the victims during rescue maneuvers.
“The release of the prospective NYSC members came following a joint operation by security agencies... Governor Hope Uzodimma praised security agencies for their swift intervention, noting that the state government deliberately adopted a discreet approach to protect the victims.”
Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu confirmed that the joint security task force successfully neutralized the threat without casualty among the hostages, returning them to safety exactly seven days after the highway ambush. The successful rescue brings immense relief to families, corps members, and civil society groups, though public calls persist for heightened highway patrols along inter-state transit corridors used by corps members traveling to orientation camps nationwide.
