Federal Government Insists New Tax Laws Take Effect January 1

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that there will be no reversal or postponement in the implementation of Nigeria’s new tax laws, which are scheduled to take effect on January 1. Government officials stated that all necessary legal and administrative processes have been concluded, and the reforms are part of a broader effort to modernise tax administration, expand the tax base, and improve revenue generation across federal and subnational levels. The new laws were passed by the National Assembly and signed into law after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
According to government representatives, the reforms are designed to harmonise tax collection, reduce multiple taxation, strengthen compliance, and improve transparency in how taxes are assessed and collected. The Federal Government stressed that the new framework will support fiscal sustainability, reduce leakages, and align Nigeria’s tax system with international best practices. Authorities also noted that public awareness campaigns and engagements with states, businesses, and professional bodies have been ongoing to ensure a smooth transition.
Officials maintained that delaying implementation would undermine confidence in the reform process and weaken long-term economic planning. They reiterated that enforcement would commence as scheduled, while feedback mechanisms remain open to address operational challenges that may arise. What is your view on the January 1 rollout of the new tax laws, and how do you think it will affect individuals and businesses? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
